A poll of 500 likely voters conducted by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel found only 45 percent in favor of the property tax relief proposal on the Jan. 29 presidential primary ballot, which is heavily touted by Gov. Charlie Crist. Because it would amend the state constitution, a 60 percent approval is required.

While 45 percent of those surveyed said they would likely vote for the plan, 34 percent said they likely would not and the remaining 21 percent said they were undecided.

Support for the referendum is substantially lower than in previous polls. The earlier surveys, including one in November published by the Orlando Sentinel, showed public support hovering just below the 60 percent needed for passage. Del Ali of Research 2000 and Lance DeHaven-Smith, a political science professor at Florida State University, said the new poll does not bode well for the chances of tax relief winning.
